The Zodiac series of Istanbul artist Onur Hastürk show a contemporary engagement of Ottoman illuminated manuscripts and miniature paintings stunning in its meticulous technique and gender-fluid imagery. In the series, the artist reveals a fascination with astrology and 16th century mysticism in which homo-erotic intimacies are delicately inscribed. The Zodiac series is inspired by the 1582 manuscript Metali'ü's-sa'adet . ONUR HASTÜRK (*1983 in Mersin) was trained in the traditional art of gilding, Ottoman miniature paintings and Islamic illuminated manuscripts. After earning his Masters from the Department of Fine Arts at Marmara University Istanbul, he spent time on residencies in Florence, Italy, and New York, US. Hastürk has held various solo and collective shows in Istanbul and abroad, such as in Milan, Rome, Porto, London, and Düsseldorf (Anna Laudel) The artist lives and works in Istanbul.
